Background

Dr. Brandi Burton, originally from Mt. Prospect, Illinois received her bachelor’s degree in animal sciences in May of 2015. As an undergraduate student, Dr. Burton participated in the Illini Equestrians, worked at the University Horse Farm, was a member of the Meats Judging Team, competed on the English Equestrian Show Team, and was a member of one of the very first animal sciences ambassador teams. She also participated in Dr. Rodney Johnson’s research lab all for four years, studying how the PRRS virus affected brain development in a piglet model. 

Following graduation, Dr. Burton attended the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in which she recently graduated with her DVM in 2019. While in vet school, Dr. Burton held the officer position of president for the Equine Association. Currently, Dr. Burton works as an associate veterinarian for Suidae Health & Production. Some of her daily tasks  include coordinating field based research, organizing student externships, paperwork, sick calls, research proposals, budgets, etc. Although she is based in Northern, Iowa, Dr. Burton supports and oversees the health of sow and grow-finish farms in over a span of three states: Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska. In closing, Dr. Burton expressed that her favorite aspect of her career are the producers she is able to work with, as well as the ability to be involved in their business and apply your education to real world situations. Being a veterinarian is a lot more than just medicine.
